Flying To Las Vegas

I don’t know how fast a commercial plane is going when it becomes airborne, but it doesn’t seem fast enough from my perspective as a passenger. Shortly afterwards, as the objects below become smaller, the movement seems to stop altogether for a moment.

The reverse happens when you land.

I looked out over the landscape below and tried to discern what I was seeing. At one point, I saw what looked like a giant game board. Large circles of green and brown that surely could not be seen for what they were on the ground. I have no idea where I was. As we crossed the desolate mountains, it looked like someone had draped a long string overtop. I realized it was a lonely road, seemingly on the way to nowhere.

Las Vegas suddenly springs into view after miles of mountains and no signs of civilization. It exists because it has water. A giant oasis in a desert.

Most jet airliners have a takeoff speed roughly between 150 and 180 mph. This is of course dependent on the weight of the aircraft as well as the configuration of things like the flaps.

Sorry. Plane nerd here. I'll stop and yell "Viva Las Vegas!" now. :-)

Plane nerds are welcome here.

I don't know the plane model, but it is Southwest. All their planes are the same.

According to the websites I checked they use Boeing 737's, which means you were probably going a little faster than 150 mph when your plane's rubber left the road.

I know they do and what I see is an optical illusion.

Been to Vegas and back! I'm just getting around to writing about it!
