Last Thursday, California governor Jerry Brown signed the "Fair Education Act," which requires schools to add LGBT history to their curriculum.

I have not learned a great deal about exactly how this was to be done or at what age this would begin to be taught. I've gotten the impression that there aren't a lot of set-in-stone guidelines in the law.

*Edit: the California Board of Education will decide how this law will be carried out.*

LGBT people have played roles throughout history, and the discrimination that they have faced is largely undocumented in school texts, though the legacy of Harvey Milk had already begun to make its way into school curriculums in California.

But three years ago, those of us in the rest of the country became familiar with this nice little provision California has, allowing voters to repeal a law - or even a court decision - with a ballot initiative.

So it should come as no surprise that religious right organizations are on the move to put this law to a vote, as well. The spin has already begun. They are saying the law is about indoctrinating the children by teaching sex education to five-year-olds. Actually, it's pretty much the exact same argument they used last time. And, sadly, it worked.

I hope the fight to keep this law on the books is better organized than the fight to prevent the passage of Proposition 8.

Take off the kid gloves this time, Equality California. The time to play nice is over.
