From what I've heard, Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) is pretty pleased with himself and the arguments he made in this debate.

But the lgbt population and allies are very pleased with Dan Savage's performance in this debate. He came with facts and more than a little knowledge of scripture. He was articulate, had extensive notes and was well-prepared.

Brown came with the same talking points I've heard many times, including portraying the Christian right as the victims in this "culture war." He also said that marriage is primarily for procreation, an argument that was debunked in the Proposition 8 trial, and tried to steer Savage into a slippery slope argument about polygamy, which Savage deflected right back, because heterosexual marriage has led to polygamy.

But the most ironic point Brown made was the justification for not working to make divorce illegal or at least harder: "Just because you believe something is wrong doesn't mean you make it illegal." So why does this not apply to same sex marriage?

This is over an hour long, but well-worth watching. At least listen to it while you're packing for Dragon*Con. You won't regret it.

"Just because you believe something is wrong doesn't mean you make it illegal."

I love it when people like that contradict their own argument.

Have fun at Dragon*Con!

I think it's too long to have any chance of going viral, but I enjoyed this. Dan Savage is a great ally.

You may be right about it not going viral. On top of the length, NOM has put their own copy on YouTube so they can direct their flock there and control the comments delete pro-gay comments.
