Stonewall

The modern-day lgbt movement started with the Stonewall riots in 1969. Having done some research into lgbt history, I was aware of the timing of several events and the lgbt groups that existed at the time. There were indications, even in the brief write-ups and bullet points I read through, that not all was well and harmonious within the lgbt population. Especially the "t" part. Transgender people are still marginalyzed and largely misunderstood today. I've seen this in my own area and among my own friends and associates.

For me, however, no one "ciswashed*" Stonewall. I knew it was the drag queens and transgender people who started and lead the riots. But this article gives a first-hand account of the events and puts them in context with attitudes and other goings-on at the time. Very interesting.

*For those of you unaware of the term, "cisgender" means those of us who are not transgender.
