To my anonymous friend, no, I don't think you're a hypocrite. And I am glad to hear your position on this issue.

However, the church does not own marriage in this country. A marriage contract is available to Christians, Jews, Muslims, as well as Atheists and others.

The government is involved, and for the sake of equality outside the church walls, this relationship is necessary. The possibility of changing terminology from "marriage" to "civil contract" for all things outside the Church is such a radical concept, I don't see it happening in the near future, if ever.

The government decides whom it will recognize as married. From a state standpoint, this has mostly rights and equal treatment implications, but from a FEDERAL standpoint, there are potentially major financial implications.

Where the "Defense of Marriage Act" is concerned, the lawsuit before the court exists because a widow from a lesbian marriage was forced to pay over $300,000 in estate taxes. This would not have happened if her spouse had been a man. There are other tax implications, as well as death benefits.

From a military standpoint, married couples who are federally recognized are treated differently in housing, access, and spousal benefits in the case that the soldier dies, among other things.

I personally don't care if the LDS Church or any other performs marriages for same sex couples, though there are others who want that very badly. I understand the separation of church and state, and that the churches must be allowed to govern themselves, but they must refrain from oppressing their fellow citizens in exchange for this freedom, and some religious institutions have been accused of crossing this line when it comes to marriage equality.
