Forty Years Ago Yesterday

I did a presentation on LGBT history last fall for a local PFLAG chapter. I titled it "A Somewhat Thorough but Incomplete LGBT History Compilation." How apt.

I just learned about this tragic event in LGBT history today.

Remembering the UpStairs Lounge: the Largest LGBT Massacre In US History

Though the police's investigation of this fire was lackluster, it's largely believed that a patron who had been kicked out had set the blaze. So, although this may not have been motivated by homophobia, the community's callous indifference in the aftermath is a travesty. It is a stain on New Orleans that should never be forgotten, and it will never be erased.
