Five for Nine

My newspaper has published my rebuttal to another reader's proclamation that I am not a real Christian because I support lgbt rights.

Wow.

I am surprised, but glad. I think this is my best letter yet.

[Name withheld to protect the guilty ;)]’s letter (“Biblical message is clear” – Aug 5th) proclaims that I am not good enough to be a Christian because I support gay rights.

As children, we are taught certain realities according to our family’s beliefs, including, for many of us, religious views. As we grow, some of what we learn and experience seems to conflict with what we have been taught to believe.

As we ponder these conflicts, one of three things can happen: A rejection of religion because it is in conflict with the real world and real people (atheism); A rejection of beliefs about the world and certain people because they are in conflict with the real truth of one’s religion (fundamentalism); or a reexamination of one’s religious beliefs within the context of what one learns of the real world and real people.

I fall into this third category.

This world and its people are God’s creations. Why then, would it not make sense to embrace them as part of my Christian faith?

Ten years ago, someone very dear to me told me he was gay. He said he was born that way. I have met dozens of other gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. Each reinforces for me the belief that this is not a choice or a “lifestyle.” People who believe otherwise perpetuate their own ignorance by rejecting facts, embracing junk science, and picking out certain scripture verses to support their prejudice.

People did the same to justify segregation.

If the Bible’s message is so clear, why do Biblical scholars disagree on what it says? The Bible is not a simple book.

What it comes down to for me is this: I believe that God would not condemn any of His children for being who they were born to be.

I think when I go for my walk tonight, I will have to swing by the convenience store and pick up a few extra copies. ;)

This is a wonderful letter! Clear, polite but firm, and of course I totally agree with every word :-)

Heh, you could have put the guilty party's name ... since it's in the online newspaper! ;) I can't believe I missed that one; but I only check every so often. Of course, I like your response. *hugs*

Yes, "someone very dear to me," but I didn't put the name of the paper, either, did I?

I work very hard to keep things ambiguous here. My online life and my real life are separated as much as possible (though I've outed myself as a gay rights supporter in the local paper, anyway).

It will be interesting to see who comments on this at church and who doesn't (not that everyone reads the paper, but most of the older population do). Not much was said about the last one.

I like making people think about this.

And the pastor preached about open-mindedness last Sunday (and he used the "g" word!).

Yes, separation of real and online is good. As is education and making people think, regardless of age! ;)

Nicely done. Your voice comes across as very calm and rational. You rock.

I try. It's a challenge; I am limited to 300 words, so it's a good thing I have decent editing skills.
