It's Been a Wierd Day

I spent a few hours this afternoon phone banking for No on 1 in Maine. You know I really care about this because:

I hate talking on the phone.

I hate getting these kinds of phone calls myself.

I was connected to a system that dials the calls for me and connects me when someone (or, more likely, the answering machine) answers - just like a REAL telemarketer, OMG!

While I'm waiting for a live human being to tell me they don't want to talk to me, I get to listen to the cheesiest (and too loud) on hold music - in the genre of my choice. I choose jazz. This includes sounds of push buttons on a phone and people answering, which is supposed to further confuse and drive me insane, I guess. And I hear a bit of the score from "Return of the Jedi," which is cool, but... why, when I chose Jazz?

There were a couple of memorable calls with very enthusiastic people saying they were definitely voting no on 1. I talked to one young girl who said she believed in marriage equality and was voting yes. I had to explain that yes means no (I think this may happen a lot, and I hope it happens to the homophobes, too.). And I talked to a very sweet, elderly lady, who said she was undecided and didn't like the TV commercials. She was up to speed on the issue and how it had come about because of a petition, etc. She said people ought to be able to do whatever they want to do, and it's really nobody else's business. I said that, unfortunately, people have made it their business to tell others they can't do whatever they want, and I encouraged her to vote no on 1. I think she will vote, and I hope she remembers our conversation in a positive way. I tried not to be too pushy because that would not work on someone like her.

She also asked where I was from because I didn't have a Maine accent. ;) A very smart woman.

If you would like to experience this and more (because I've made it sound so enticing!), you can go here.

Seriously, this race is close, and what happens in Maine will affect what happens elsewhere, so if you can, please help.

(BTW, this is all done from home. You need your phone and your computer with an internet connection.)

Thanks for sharing this. I think I will help out as soon as I figure out which time slots I am actually free.

I recommend taking the training at least two hours before your time slot. I allowed only one hour and ended up starting late because they sent the materials after I was supposed to start, and I needed time to look them over first.
