Princess Boy

It's tough for guys. One of the reasons homophobia and transphobia are so hard to overcome is because it's a "bad thing" for a guy to acknowledge his feminine side. So don't go near anything "gay," or you might catch it.

I believe we all have a bit of girl and boy in us. Gender is a spectrum, not a black and white thing.

It's OK in our society for girls and women to dress "like a boy," but if a boy likes wearing pretty, "girly" things or doing "girly" things, it's not acceptable. Don't cry. Don't wear pink. Don't watch chick flicks.

What exactly is masculine behavior? What is feminine behavior? Straight men hug and kiss in greeting frequently in other countries, so obviously, those definitions are not so clear-cut as some would like to think.

I feel sorry for anyone who can't be their true self.

When Cheryl Kilodavis' son wanted to dress like a princess, she discouraged it at first, worried what others would think. Finally, she realized that the problem was hers, not his.

When she saw that there were no books on the subject, she wrote her own.

I watched one of the videos so far. What a lovely family! The words of Dyson's older brother about how he just wanted his brother to be happy made me cry joyful tears.

The best interview I heard was on Sirius/XM radio with Larry Flick on OutQ, but I'm not aware of any clips available to link. She had all kinds of people calling in - some gay, mostly trans. Most were crying and thanking her for writing the book.

And the thing is, what is so very bad about being feminine? Men that act feminine are ridiculed. It's like being girly is the worst; it's weakness, it's affectation, it's artificiality.

Women have had our movement for breaking out of the "female role" mold; men still need to break out of the "male role" mold.

More should be brave enough to think this way. The world is out there for us ... I am getting ready for ballet class right now, followed by heavy weight lifting, and I do not see the conundrum.

And honestly, it takes a good deal of strength to do ballet.

It does, as I am reminded once again tonight ;-)
