Daniel Hernandez

Daniel Hernandez is an intern for Gabrielle Giffords.

He is also gay.

That shouldn't matter, but, given the fact that we just got through passing a repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" amid heated debate, it does matter. The rhetoric that gay and lesbian soldiers aren't good enough, or that they merely provide a "distraction" in the middle of a heated gun battle was enough to make my stomach turn (and honestly, if a delayed reaction to stress caused my recent illness, this was a contributing factor).

So here we have Hernandez, with his nurses assistance training, who immediately rushed to help those wounded in Tucson. He stayed calm amid what must have been a terrifying situation, and aided and comforted Giffords, keeping her calm, as well.

In his own words, "I tuned everything out and started going into critical-thinking mode, which was that you need to get whoever's still alive some help until EMTs arrive."

That's the kind of thinking that makes a good soldier, it seems to me.
