9/11

I remember, in the days and weeks after 9/11, seeing the tabloid and magazine covers that had not yet reacted to the news. They still talked about things that in this light no longer mattered: who was cheating on whom, who was fat, who was anorexic, who had plastic surgery, who was gay, who was pregnant.

Comedians were somber. Feeling lost like the rest of us, they didn’t know what to do. They felt it was inappropriate to be funny. Perhaps it would never be appropriate again.

I lived in a small town and worked in a rural one. That day, I felt relatively safe, as the odds I would be directly attacked were extremely small. But when the plane went down in Shanksville, PA, I was chilled to the bone. If that plane had turned the other way, it could have struck Pittsburgh. Or me.

New Yorkers and those in Washington DC had their hearts ripped out, but the rest of us did, too. We all were emotionally affected. We were financially affected, and those repercussions are still being felt today. Of course, airline security has changed. Not necessarily improved, just changed. We are surveyed and x-rayed now more than ever.

Much has changed, and much has not. On 9/11 and in the weeks after, we focused on what is really important. We became a unified front. I knew it would not last, and it has not. Politicians are more divided and ineffective than ever. People still steal and hurt and kill each other. Inequality still exists, and always will – only the groups being oppressed will change.

But most people are good and decent and helpful on a daily basis. This is the country I live in. This is the world I live in.
